Lesson 16: Stand up for what is right, even if you’re standing alone

September 04, 20171 min read

Advocate unapologetically for justice and truth. Deep within us, we inherently distinguish between right and wrong. It's a curious human facet that, often, it's actually more daunting to oppose our friends compared to adversaries. Nevertheless, someone who embodies the spirit of a black belt must be the emblem of integrity and bravery, boldly championing the right path, regardless of the personal repercussions. By doing so, they not only safeguard their own values but also serve as a beacon for others to follow.

Take a stand against the scourge of bullying. Tackling this challenge doesn't necessarily demand a face-off with the aggressor. Instead, it's about knowing when to seek assistance or, when witnessing someone else being harassed, to take initiative and find support. Employ the techniques from our dedicated anti-bullying program; they're designed to provide you with the strategies necessary to address and diffuse such situations effectively.

Confronting close acquaintances when they err can be an onerous task. Nevertheless, when friends entice you to participate in activities you instinctively know are misguided, you must muster the courage to dissent. Whether it's juvenile mischief like hurling stones, engaging in acts of bullying, committing theft, or even partaking in potentially hazardous actions such as swimming in lakes or canals, it's imperative to stand your ground and firmly say no.

In every scenario, it's about upholding one’s ethical compass and leading by example. Even when it comes to peer pressure or group dynamics that could lead astray, a true black belt, armed with the principles of martial arts, understands the profound strength in saying no to wrongdoing. This fortitude not only protects their character but also preserves the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
